Why Reading to Children from a Young Age Matters — and how Magnolia Place Preschool in Los Angeles Supports Early Literacy
At All For Kids we believe that every child deserves the best possible start in life—and that journey begins with books, stories, and meaningful moments shared through reading. As part of our ongoing commitment to early childhood education, our on-site Magnolia Place Preschool puts a strong emphasis on developing early literacy skills in a nurturing, play-based environment.
Why Reading Early Matters
Reading aloud is one of the most impactful ways to support a child’s early development. Did you know that reading aloud for 15 minutes a day exposes a child to over 1 million words a year? This short 15 minutes helps children build a rich vocabulary before they eve begin kindergarten. (Source: Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics). Whether you’re reading to your newborn, or your preschooler is beginning to recognize letters and words– it’s never too early to build a love of reading.
Here’s why early reading is essential:
- 90% of a child’s brain develops before age 5, making early literacy activities like reading especially critical during this window. (Source: First Things First)
- Children who are read to at home have a higher success rate in school and show greater language and cognitive development. (Source: National Center for Education Statistics)
- Reading aloud strengthens the bond between children and their caregivers by fostering connection, trust, and emotional security—especially during the first five years when brain development and attachment are most critical.
(Source: American Academy of Pediatrics) - Reading stimulates the parts of a child’s brain responsible for imagination, concentration, and empathy—laying the foundation for creative thinking and emotional intelligence. (Source: Reach Out and Read / AAP)
At Magnolia Place Preschool, reading is a daily part of our curriculum. We use books to spark curiosity, build confidence, and connect with each child in meaningful ways.
To help families build strong reading habits at home, All For Kids has created a FREE, Reading Tips Infographic, available in both English and Spanish. This colorful resource includes simple, practical ways to encourage reading with children at any age.
