City of Los Angeles Officially Recognizes April as Child Abuse Prevention

The City of Los Angeles has officially declared April 2026 as Child Abuse Prevention Month following a resolution introduced by Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez at the urging of All For Kids. The resolution, formally adopted by the Los Angeles City Council, affirms the City’s commitment to protecting children and strengthening families.

“Every child deserves to grow up in a safe, nurturing environment,” said Ronald E. Brown, Ph.D., All For Kids President & CEO. “We are grateful to the Los Angeles City Council, Councilmember Hernandez, and Councilwoman Heather Hutt for recognizing Child Abuse Prevention Month and affirming that prevention is not just a responsibility of child welfare agencies, but a community-wide commitment.”

The declaration was celebrated on Friday, March 27 during a special presentation at Los Angeles City Hall’s John Ferraro Council Chamber, where All For Kids staff and community partners gathered with Councilwoman Hutt, Councilmember Hernandez, and representatives from Los Angeles County’s Child Abuse Prevention Councils. The event featured remarks by Dr. Brown highlighting the importance of early intervention and prevention-focused efforts, as well as recognition of the collaborative work between the City and local organizations. Attendees left inspired and committed to promoting child well-being and family support across the region.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 47,824 children in California were confirmed victims of abuse or neglect in 2023, and 150 children died as a result. These statistics underscore the urgency of prevention-focused initiatives that support families before crises occur.

The resolution emphasizes the importance of:

• Safe, stable, and nurturing relationships in child development

• The long-term consequences of abuse and neglect

• Shared responsibility among parents, educators, healthcare providers, and community leaders

• Investment in prevention through parenting support, early childhood programs, mental health services, and economic stability resources

For over 120 years, All For Kids has strengthened families across Los Angeles County through trauma-informed services, early education, and family support programs.

“Prevention is possible,” said Brown. “When communities rally around families, children can thrive.”

Throughout April, All For Kids will join partners across the City of Los Angeles and organizations nationwide to raise awareness and encourage community action.
