Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth in Foster Care and Adoption

When people think of Pride Month, foster care and adoption may not be the first things that come to mind. Yet LGBTQ+ youth and families are deeply connected to the child welfare system.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, approximately 30% of youth in foster care identify as LGBTQ+, making them significantly overrepresented compared to the general youth population. Many of these young people have experienced family rejection, housing instability, discrimination, or a lack of supportive connections.

At the same time, LGBTQ+ adults are helping meet a critical need for children in foster care. According to the UCLA Williams Institute, same-sex couples adopt and foster at significantly higher rates than different-sex couples, helping provide safe, stable, and loving homes for children and youth who need them most.

These realities reinforce the importance of creating spaces where every child feels seen, respected, supported, and empowered to thrive.

Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth and Inclusive Resource Families

Children in foster care and adoptive homes often experience loss, trauma, transition, and uncertainty, making safe, stable, and supportive relationships essential to their growth and well-being.

For LGBTQ+ youth in foster care, an affirming home built on acceptance, emotional safety, and inclusion can have a lasting impact on mental health, self-esteem, and long-term development.

All For Kids encourages resource families to create welcoming and inclusive foster and adoptive homes where every child feels respected, supported, and valued for who they are. Through foster care training, adoption support services, caregiver education, and ongoing family-centered resources, caregivers receive the tools needed to help children heal, grow, and thrive.

We proudly welcome LGBTQ+ individuals and couples interested in foster care and adoption to provide children with the stability, connection, and compassionate care every child deserves.
